Viasaterna is pleased to present a solo exhibition project for Artissima 2023 in the Monologue/Dialogue section featuring the multidisciplinary artisti Ramak Fazel (Abadan, Iran, 1965).
The booth will present the impressive work-archive Milan Unit (1994–2009) in its original configuration, and, in addition, some medium-sized photographs extracted from the work-archive will also be shown on the walls of the booth.
Ramak Fazel’s Milan Unit was put together over a period of time starting in 1994 when he first came to Milan, up until 2009 when he returned to the United States. Milan city served as his base as he travelled all over the world, including to Yemen, the US, Japan, India, Eastern Europe and Iran, thanks to his collaboration with magazines like Domus and companies like Vitra. In 2009 he began to rent a warehouse in the outskirts of the city, which served as a safe port right up until 2017, when Viasaterna collected it and presented it as a solo show. Milan Unit brings together a multitude of photographs (negatives, diapositives and contact sheets), notes, documents and portfolios both from his private life and the historical context the artist witnessed during his time in Milan. Years in which, among other things, he photographed the world of design in a complete-ly anomalous way, investigating the places and processes of production. Achille Castiglioni, Michele De Lucchi, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari (and Lea Vergine), Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi, Bruno Munari and numerous other designers and architects are the main characters of a scene whose developments Fazel follows in detail, both publicly and from behind the scenes.
