“BREATH. Architecture of Lightness” is the title of the site-specific installation and exhibition by Mandalaki Studio, curated by Rischa Paterlini, set up in the offices of Volvo Studio Milano on the occasion of Milano Art Week & Milano Design Week 2026.
“The first word was movement,” Mandalaki explains: a starting point rooted in the Volvo context, yet gradually expanding into a broader imaginative landscape of clear air, lightness, and high-altitude atmospheres.
At the center of the space, an ethereal sculpture takes shape as a
never-evolving organism: an ultra-thin membrane activated by invisible flows generates a continuous choreography, never repeating itself. The intervention renders perceptible what usually escapes the eye, giving form to the breath of air and its capacity to pass through and transform the environment.
This visual dimension is accompanied by In/Out, an original sound component developed by pianist, composer, and multimedia artist Luca Longobardi. The sound originates from the mechanical breath of the fans that activate the installation, transformed into acoustic material and reworked through a generative structure. The result is an open, invisible, and unstable system in constant evolution, one that does not simply accompany the installation, but shares its very nature.
This same principle extends into the offices of Volvo Studio Milano, where the project unfolds into a second exhibition dimension. Here, the high-altitude photographs that initiated the research on light are presented for the first time: images of landscapes suspended between sky and atmosphere, where air becomes visual and chromatic matter. Horizons and chromatic gradations enter into dialogue with the lamps from theHalo series, transforming the spaces into a sequence of luminous atmospheres that amplify the project’s perceptual dimension.
