Why should we care about an archive?
On Milan Unit by Ramak Fazel

The exhibition project Why Should We Care About an Archive? Around Milan Unit by Ramak Fazel, is a synthesis and reworking of Milan Unit, Fazel's exhibition that we presented in 2018 at Viasaterna. The archive is a metaphor for asking what and how we preserve our memories, and through the preservation of these memories we propose to work on the concept of absence. What do we have left? How do we preserve within this archive such memories and productions? These unknowns take shape through Fazel's phrases and through his archive, containing work from the artist's much-loved years in Milan. The exhibition will also include the presentation of the book Milan Unit. The publication is the first monograph produced in collaboration with Gaia Cambiaggi, Delfino Sisto Legnani and Benedetta Pomini. The volume contains images from the 15 years he spent in Milan. Years in which, among other things, he photographed the world of design in an unusual way, investigating places and production processes. Achille Castiglioni, Michele De Lucchi, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi and numerous other colleagues whom Ramak Fazel follows in every development, in front of and behind the scenes. He photographs them at work and in their private lives, alone or in groups, in official or informal portraits.
