The Subject Matters
Group Show
Viasaterna is pleased to present The Subject Matters, group exhibition curated by Luca Fiore, which will open on Monday 20 January, from 6 to 9pm.
The exhibition explores the potential of photographic language when confronted with subjects considered ordinary and of minimal importance, bringing together 45 works taken between 1992 and 2023 by five authors of different nationalities, histories and experiences: Gerry Johansson (Sweden, 1945), Guido Guidi (Italy, 1941), Takashi Homma (Japan, 1962), Terri Weifenbach (USA, 1957) and Vanessa Winship (UK, 1960).
With the advent of photography, narrative capacity and verisimilitude, once fundamental to art as understood within that hierarchical framework, gradually lost their centrality. And it is in the 20th century that photography becomes the privileged medium for telling stories, starting with American photojournalism, and constructing myths, such as those of celebrities. However, art photography increasingly chooses to focus on subjects that the old hierarchy considers minor. Thus, landscapes, ordinary objects and fragments of everyday life appear, and become, subjects of extraordinary poetic power.
