Alessandro Calabrese
Trento, 1983. Lives and works in Milan.

After his degree in Architecture from the IUAV in Venice, in 2012 he was awarded a Master in Photography and Visual Design from the NABA in Milan (the New Academy of Fine Arts). He then moved to Amsterdam where he worked as an assistant to the photographer Hans Van Der Meer and at Paradox, developing his interest in photography publishing. Since 2015, he has served as a professor at the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo. In 2013, he was a finalist in the first edition of the Premio Francesco Fabbri, and in 2014 together with Milo Montelli, he edited the book A Drop In The Ocean, winner of the Prina Prize and featured at the European Photography Festival in Reggio Emilia, as well as at the Triennial of Photography Hamburg. In 2015, with the same project, he was selected for the Francesco Fabbri Prize, and was invited to present his work at the Winterthur Fotomuseum on the occasion of Pla(t)form. Shortlisted for the Prix Levallois 2015 (Paris), together with the publishing house Skinnerboox he published Die Deutsche Punkinvasion, which was then displayed during the Fotopub Festival of Novo Mesto (Slovenia). Chosen by Foam in 2015 as among the 21 up-and-coming talents of international photography, his work was featured at the Atelier Neerlandais (Paris), De Markten (Brussels) and the Beaconsfield Gallery (London) with the project A Failed Entertainment. With the same project, he took part in the group show 2016 - Sulla Nuova Fotografia Italiana at Viasaterna (Milan), and also won the Graziadei Prize at the MACRO Museum (Rome). In 2017, he was invited to display A Failed Entertainment during the European Photography Festival (Reggio Emilia) as part of the group show entitled Archivi del Futuro, curated by Walter Guadagnini, Elio Grazioli and Diane Dufour. On that occasion, the book of the same name was presented, published by Skinnerboox. In 2017 his first solo show Impasse is exhibited in Viasaterna and in 2018 he participates at Casino Palermo, a residency program hosted by the Milanese gallery in Palermo, Sicily. In 2017 he presented his solo exhibition Impasse at Viasaterna and between 2018 and 2019 new solo exhibitions followed at Galerie Pascal Goossens (Bruxelles), Unseen Photo Fair (Amsterdam) and at MAXXI contemporary art museum (Rome). In 2020 his works are exposed in two group shows: “After Monet” at MART (Rovereto) and “Gradi di vuoto” at Viasaterna. His works were also exposed during the 2020 edition of Arte Fiera in Bologna, at the Viasaterna booth.
