Alessandro Calabrese

After graduating in Architecture at the IUAV in Venice and a Master in Photography and Visual Design at NABA Milan, she moved to Amsterdam where she assisted the photographer Hans Van Der Meer and worked at Paradox, maturing her interest in photographic publishing. Since 2015 he has been teaching photography at the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti in Bergamo. In 2013 he was a finalist in the first edition of the Francesco Fabbri Prize and in 2014 he edited, together with Milo Montelli, the book A Drop In The Ocean, winner of the Prina Prize and exhibited at the Fotografia Europea festival in Reggio Emilia and at the Triennale di Fotografia in Hamburg. In 2015, with the same project, he was selected for the Premio Francesco Fabbri and was invited to present his work at Winterthur Fotomuseum on the occasion of Pla(t)form. A finalist at the Prix Levallois 2015 (Paris), he published Die Deutsche Punkinvasion with the Skinnerboox publishing house, subsequently exhibited during the Fotopub Festival in Novo Mesto (Slovenia). Selected by Foam in 2015 among the 21 emerging talents of international photography, he exhibited his project A Failed Entertainment at Atelier Neerlandais (Paris), De Markten (Brussels) and Beaconsfield Gallery (London). With the same project he participated in the collective exhibition 2016 - On the New Italian Photography at Viasaterna (Milan) and won the Graziadei Prize at the MACRO Museum (Rome). In 2017 he was invited to exhibit A Failed Entertainment during Fotografia Europea (Reggio Emilia) as part of the group show Archivi del Futuro curated by Walter Guadagnini, Elio Grazioli and Diane Dufour. On the same occasion, the book of the same name, published by Skinnerboox, was presented. In 2017 he presented his first solo exhibition Impasse with Viasaterna, which has represented him since 2016, followed by three solo exhibitions between 2018 and 2019 at the Pascal Goossens Gallery (Brussels), Unseen Photo Fair (Amsterdam) and the MAXXI Museum (Rome). In 2018, he took part in Casino Palermo, a residency programme hosted in Palermo by the Milan gallery during which Calabrese explored the city of Palermo, collecting sensations and encounters, conversations and thoughts. Barracuda is a series of hand-written posters that, by mixing quotations and personal feelings, crosses the grammatical and structural boundaries born from this experience. He is artist-in-residence at Viafarini, Milan in 2019, at Villa Filanda Antonini in Treviso in 2021, at the Castromediano Museum in Lecce in 2023, on the occasion of the Strategia Fotografia call for entries, and finally, at the Planches Contact Festival in Deauville (France) in 2024.
In 2019 he participated in the group exhibition Everyday Life at the Galleria Civica in Trento. In 2020 he exhibits in the group shows After Monet at MART (Rovereto), Gradi di vuoto at Viasaterna, Milano Piano Zero at Triennale di Milano, and in the following years Refocus #2, also at Triennale, and Tre-di-ci - Sguardi sui musei lombardi at Palazzo Reale Milano promoted by MiC.
From 2019 and 2021 respectively, he teaches Editorial Systems for Art at the Master in Communication Design and Photographic Documentation at the Master in Photography and Visual Design at NABA, Milan. He also curates the programming of CONDOMINIO, a co-sharing space dedicated to contemporary photography and image culture that he founded in 2021 in via Melchiorre Gioia 41, Milan. Calabrese has also started collaborative programmes with fashion brands, from Lover Lover to MSGM's autumn/winter 2021 capsule collection. In 2022 he collaborated with Volvo Studio Milano for the solo exhibition Hierarchy of Genres curated by Mara Sartore, and on occasion of Milan Art Week 2024 he exhibited at the offices of the international company Clearwater a solo show entitled Se Tutto Bruciasse curated by Francesca Interlenghi. In 2025 he presented his second solo show ‘Perseo’ in Viasaterna. In the same year, he took part in the group exhibition Transitions: From Photography to Hybrid Images, curated by Mauro Zanchi in collaboration with Aurelio Andrighetto, at Viasaterna Gallery.
